“美丽的太湖，迷人的西山”，这是上海社科院教授登上西山岛的第一句赞美词。太湖72峰，其中西山有41峰。
所谓“山不在高，有仙则名”，最高峰缥缈峰也只有336米，但其中丰富的人文历史内涵却赋予了西山无穷无尽的魅力。
林屋山，位于西山镇东南部，根据历史记载，早在大禹治水期间，大禹就在此留下过足迹，《吴地记》载“在县西一百三十里中有洞庭，深远世莫能测。吴王使灵威丈人入洞穴，十七日不能尽，因得禹书”。林屋洞号称“天下第九洞天”，俗称龙洞，位于西山东部的镇夏村。林屋洞出土过唐代的金龙、玉简、神像等道教文物。古人诗赞：“一山飞峙太湖中，千娇深藏林屋洞”。
道隐园位于林屋洞南侧，又名无碍精舍，系宋无碍居士（李弥大）隐居处。他曾任平江(今苏州)知府不满二月，就被罢官，遂筑园隐居，自称居所为“道隐园”。他的《道隐园记》刻于林屋洞口。1995年4月公布为江苏省级文物保护单位。
以林屋为中心，环山数千亩梅林连绵不断，其面积之大、梅种之多、密度之高堪称全国之最。林屋自古为赏梅胜地，自唐朝起就留下了深厚的梅文史迹。这里有红梅、绿梅、白梅，尤以白梅最多。每到梅花盛开时节，数千亩梅花，白茫茫一片，似雪、似海，景象极为壮观。林屋梅海还是中国梅文化研究基地，每年一次的中国太湖梅花节在此举办。
石公山是西山镇东南隅的一座山峰，排列西山八景之首。它三面临水，岩石奇秀，翠柏葱郁。石公山以前有奇石两块，伛偻似老翁的就是石公，另一块是石婆。他俩差肩而立，相对而望，传说在日夜思念着隔湖的大姑、小姑。石公之名由此而得。
石公山，位于西山东南角，因山前原有巨型太湖石，状若老翁，故名“石公”。“石有族聚，太湖为甲”，宋代闻名天下的“花石纲”就采于此地，并留下了“联云障”等遗迹。山腰南部，四角翘飞的御墨亭，因中置清世祖顺治御书“敬佛”石碑而得名，作为镇山之宝，“御墨亭”三字由溥杰所书。“归云洞”三字为明代严澂草书，洞口有徐纲楷书“读圣贤书，行仁义事，存忠孝心”等摩崖石刻。
断山亭为方形，亭柱上镌刻着著名书法家费新我书写的明王鏊的楹联“山与人相见，天将水共浮”。亭中还有古人张鹏冲的诗句:“石登盘幽曲，孤亭瞰渺茫。傍空无四壁，乘月饮湖光。”
来鹤亭相传建亭时，有一群鹤从西子湖的放鹤亭飞来，见到青山绿水，便栖息宿夜，故亭名“来鹤”。亭柱上的对联“虹飞霞际落，鹤舞镜中回”，系著名书画家吴䍩木所书。亭位于危岩之上，气势不凡。亭后有古柏一株，苍劲挺拔。悬崖脚下有“鹤池”一方。
禹王庙是西山岛民为纪念治水有功的大禹而建立的祠庙。禹王庙历史悠久，据史料记载，最早修建于梁代，距今已有1200多年的历史。禹王庙现存的大殿，为清朝嘉庆十四年（1809年）的建筑物，禹王庙占地20余亩。
古意盎然的禹王庙，不仅在巧妙精致中表现它的艺术美，而且还在与自然环境的融合中反映出它的形象美。禹王庙东南角的古码头，是明代遗物，码头长65米，宽3.4米，高1.8米，码头用石均为花岗石，气魄之雄伟，历史之悠久，堪称太湖之最。
69路（苏州火车站出发）、58路（吴中公交车站出发）西山农业园区、林屋洞、石公山均可下站。全程分别约2小时、1小时，票价5元。末班车21:00。
